How Mike and Amanda met...

Long before the business of Bright Spot Design-Build was officially created in 2010, its seeds were planted in the coming together of its owners Mike and Amanda Paglinger (who were Mike Pagliarulo and Amanda Ettinger before they married...do you see what they did there?) Amazingly, they were born in the same hospital in San Francisco in the late 1970s, even though they didn't actually lay eyes on each other until 2004 in Portland, OR! They love telling that part of their story, because it feels like proof they were meant to be together. It was definitely *spark* at first sight on the day Amanda began working as a deconstructionist for The Rebuilding Center, where Mike was already a site manager. But it took two years of dismantling houses side by side, and many hysterical conversations across denailing stations, for them to admit their burgeoning crushes on each other and go on their first date. Within days of that admission, it was clear that they had found each other's soul mate.

How Bright Spot got its name...

In the two years of merely being co-workers, Mike and Amanda established a sweet bond in which it was clear that Mike could appreciate Amanda for her spirit even when she was having a bad day, and Amanda felt seen by Mike in a way that was so precious to her. At the time, Amanda was dealing with some significant depression and there would be days at work when it had an obvious impact on her job performance. The beautiful thing is that Mike would always greet her on these days with a big smile and say "Hey, Bright Spot!" That's the nickname he had created for her, and Amanda was often dumbfounded that he could see her light when she felt so dark inside. The nickname stuck, and it always lifted Amanda's spirit to be called it. Mike's natural skill as a friend to all who sees the best in everyone made a huge difference to Amanda, and it is this dynamic that sits at the core of what Bright Spot Design-Build is all about (click here to read more about our philosophy).

How the Business Came to Be...

As Mike and Amanda's "Decon Days" came to a close (there are only so many years you can swing a gorilla bar in one's life) they began to feel a pull towards the more creative side of the home improvement field. Harvesting salvageable building materials and preparing them for reuse had been super satisfying, but they were ready and inspired to instead be putting those materials back together into things of beauty for the home environment, and to primarily participate in the making of living spaces. The two homes they owned together (each had bought a house as a singleton) became the perfect canvases on which to flex their "designer-builder" muscles. They completely remodeled both houses around the time they got married in 2007...one to live in and one to rent. The process was so rewarding that they decided to offer their skills to the community.

Mike got his contractor's license in 2010, and Amanda made a bunch of cool custom furniture (out of recycled wood, of course) while he developed his basic toolkit and portfolio doing whatever jobs came their way. When Amanda transitioned from the studio into cleaner office work so that she could prepare to be a mama (Moses was born in 2013!) she taught herself some wicked drawing skills with Sketchup. Bright Spot is now in a sweet rhythm of both Amanda and Mike coming up with great solutions to clients' spatial challenges, Amanda sketching up the designs, and Mike executing them with superior craftsmanship. They are always open for opportunities to make people's spaces awesome.
