BEFORE

FROM MELANCHOLY TO MEANINGFUL

Our "mudroom" is a small space between the kitchen and the backyard at the side entrance to our home. I used to be so sad at the sight of it (see "before" pic) that I didn't even want to spend time in the adjacent kitchen. Since overhauling this room, however, I feel so much better about that whole corner of the house! Not only do I love being in the kitchen now, but I also feel welcomed when I come home through the side entrance, which is the main one our family uses. The mudroom is still a transition zone and as such will probably always tend towards chaos...but with a little creativity and relatively few resources, we were able to make it so that it fulfills its critical functions just perfectly, and that makes me very happy.

BEFORE: Everything about this room had been scabbed together from completely utilitarian things we had around the house...nothing intentional nor beautiful here!

AFTER: A modest overhaul with things that are functional AND beautiful makes this space bright and inviting, much better to come home to!

BEFORE: Car seat bench...somewhat practical but not at all pretty. Dark curtains, cluttered side table, and bright yellow recycling bins...uhhm, nope.

AFTER: We designed and made this recycling bench from salvaged wood and found fabric to meet our particular needs in this space. The metal mesh Ikea bins hold recyclables and other gear, and the orange basket is for things that are on their way out the door. Streamlined, efficient, and multi-functional = much better!
